The Drowning Man's Coat

By Harry Bolman

Why save the drowning man’s coat?
How insensitive could I be?
If you were that drowning man,
With your hand outstretched to me.

I could offer words of comfort
Say things that just pretend
to somehow make you better,
but your heart might never mend.

Eating food without nutrition;
enduring sleep without rest.
When God finally gives the exam,
How will you pass the test?

Words of wisdom would mean nothing
If in your heart they do not sing.
With emotions clouding your judgement
How much good could they bring?

If we only save his coat,
Then what is this man to do?
Drowning in the sea of confusion
Hand outstretched to you.
