By Atulananda Acarya
Their marriage was born like an innocent child
At the beginning it seemed like a road skirted by flowers
Where everything floated in a celestial dream
With the greatest enthusiasm, love was avowed
On the path to maturity pain gradually arose
Revealing realities neither anticipated learning
Defects detested, disagreements, and envy
Tests to determine if both were truly appreciative
Without condemnation, as in nature recognizable forms emerge
So a relationship ripens, purifies and grows to perfection
Based upon mutual esteem they helped one another
Speak truth, serve, listen each to the other and rectify
The true marriage is a struggle for purity
It is to look for the truth and real commitment required of us
It is to raise children, dispose of selfishness, conquer ourselves; not only the pleasure of a partner
It is to analyse, to understand, to forgive, with someone faithful that can help us
It is a great struggle that presents the mind with many problems
It demands a broad disposition and a vast store of trust
And the most important thing: One has to continue loving, even where strength is missing
Because a beautiful and pure love is effort, attentively guarded by hope
Therefore, divorce is the great poison of fools
As an accomplished abortion is pleasure transformed into torture
One has to correct, to continue and to advance, at any price
So that patience, understanding and humility, preserve their positions
Divorce is the crash of two deaf prides, the collision of mutual hatred
It is the triumph of defects neither conquered nor vanquished
The inevitable result of forgetting that everything obeys Krishna
That love should not die is the sacrifice of the virtuous one
Therefore, I tell you mother: Don't pronounce that word even in dreams
Merely contemplating the possibility kills the real solution
Demands necessarily arise; for what is good demands effort
Inconsistency, infidelity and weakness encourages and invites this act
Many times a patient's cure is painful
And to prevent his escape one must restrain or anaesthetize him
What is gained from the pursuit of pure pleasure?
Divorce provides limitless opportunity for selfishness
Don't forget, marriage is a voluntary work of extraordinary effort
And who, invited to participate or intrudes injures all and fragile innocents alike
So let no one entertain to provoke such calamity
That breaks the bond of those who once loved each other
You may think or say that everything was always a deceit
But the truth is that we should all love each other
Don't begrudge those who possess the happiness you desire
Be satisfied and happy, and give thanks to Sri Krishna in all
Divorce is prohibited to avoid misfortune to yourself and to your children
Learn to detest a life of failure
Life is a great effort, ask a yogi, it is sacrifice!
It should become the hero's triumph, what for others was decline!
