RAGA

The melody is what colours the mind. Raga is the principal form of the music from India. It is a big system of improvisation, but with fixed standard melodies. This is raga, the heart of the music. There is a saying in Sanskrit: 'Ranyayati iti ragah', "Raga is what colours the mind". The beauty of a raga elevates the listener to a stage of mental serenity and peace. Each note in the musical system from India, is not only one tone, but brings within itself certain expression or emotion. It is because of the nature of the notes - considering as many musical tones as representation of ideas -, that never can be said that a musician "invents" a raga. With other words; a raga is discovered, like a biologist could discover new aspects of life or an explorer a new continent.

Raga is a melodious structure that is established by tradition or birth and inspired in the spirit of a music expert.

We can say that a raga is a defined melodic form, subtle, made from a succession of notes within an octave, each different from the other and distinct for its own particular sequence of notes, number of tones, ascending and descending orders, prominent notes, characteristic phrases, etc.
